Can You Do This Yourself
Mayer's median home was built in 1987, and a lot of the openers out here have never been swapped once. That matters more than people think. Federal rules requiring photo-eye reversing sensors on new openers didn't lock in until 1993, so an original 1987 unit may be running with no sensors at all, or with a pair bolted on later by whoever owned the house before you.
You can safely check a few things yourself. Pull the manual release and see if the door moves smoothly by hand - if it's heavy or catches, that's a spring or track issue, not the opener. Check that the wall button and remote both fail the same way; if only the remote fails, it's likely the antenna or a dead battery, not the motor. Look for the two sensor eyes near the floor on each side of the track. If you don't see any, or one is missing, stop there - that's not a DIY wiring job, and running the opener without them isn't something we'd sign off on.
What we don't recommend touching yourself: the logic board, the capacitor on a screw-drive unit, or anything involving the motor housing. On openers this old, the wrong screwdriver in the wrong spot can short a board that was already on its last year of life.
How Long It Takes

A straightforward opener repair - a sensor realignment, a logic board swap, a dead capacitor - usually runs less than the drive itself takes. A full opener replacement, especially on an older 1/3 horsepower chain-drive unit that's finally given out, takes longer because we're pulling the old rail and motor mount, not just bolting on a new head unit.
